When a child complains of a persistent toothache, a Pulpotomy is often the most effective way to save the tooth and stop the pain. Frequently referred to as a "baby root canal," this procedure is a routine, highly successful treatment used primarily on primary (baby) teeth to treat deep decay without the need for a full extraction.
Saving the Smile: What is a Pulpotomy?
A pulpotomy is performed when decay has reached the soft inner pulp of a tooth—the area containing nerves and blood vessels—but has not yet extended into the roots. By removing only the diseased portion of the pulp, we can preserve the healthy root structure, allowing the baby tooth to remain in place until it is naturally replaced by a permanent tooth.
Why it Matters for Children
Keeping baby teeth healthy is more than just about aesthetics. They serve as essential "space maintainers" for the adult teeth waiting underneath. An early extraction can lead to:
Shifting Teeth: Nearby teeth may tilt into the gap, causing crowding.
Speech Issues: Proper tooth placement is vital for clear pronunciation.
Chewing Difficulty: Maintaining a full set of teeth ensures a healthy diet.
The Procedure: Quick and Comfortable
We understand that pediatric dental visits require an extra touch of care. A pulpotomy is typically faster than a standard adult root canal:
Numbing: The area is thoroughly numbed to ensure the child feels nothing but light pressure.
Cleaning: The decayed part of the crown and the infected upper pulp are removed.
Medication: A specialized therapeutic dressing is placed over the remaining healthy pulp to promote healing and prevent infection.
The Final Seal: To provide strength for chewing, the tooth is usually covered with a Stainless Steel Crown or a tooth-colored restoration.
Recovery and Care
Most children return to their normal activities almost immediately after the numbness wears off. With proper brushing and regular check-ups, a pulpotomy-treated tooth can function perfectly until it's time for the "tooth fairy" to visit.
